Welcome to Worthing Psychotherapy

I'm Kate Nicholls

I offer psychotherapy and supervision in West Sussex.

Perhaps you find yourself here because your anxiety and depression are affecting your everyday life, you're tired of the daily struggles you face and you want something to change. Maybe you recognise that you are driven to repeat patterns of behaviour that cause you distress and pain in relationships. Perhaps you've had a sense for a while that something isn't quite right, a voice inside stopping you from living a happy and fulfilling life; you’re curious to see if therapy could help.

Our current thoughts and feelings - how we experience ourselves and others today - are always affected by what went before, often stemming from childhood. Our reactions to friends and family, along with our internal emotions and thought processes, are strongly based on how family members responded to us back then.

Working psychodynamically together, your therapeutic journey will bring unconscious feelings into consciousness, as we work through previously unknown thoughts and feelings, trauma, rejections and losses.

My Qualifications

I hold an MSc (Distinction) in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy from the University of London, a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology, along with a Diploma in Counselling Skills.

I am a fully clinically trained, insured, and registered Senior Accredited Psychotherapist with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP), a Psychodynamic Counsellor with the British Psychoanalytic Counsel (BPC), a qualified supervisor and a member of the British Association for Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Supervision (BAPPS), and a member of the Birkbeck Counselling Association (BCA).

Weekly face-to-face or online therapy

We will commit to meeting weekly, either face-to-face at my safe, quiet and confidential consulting room in Rowlands Road, Worthing, or online, for 50 minutes, at the same time each week.

Whatever you may be experiencing, my aim is to help you better understand the situation you find yourself in, and provide a safe, non-judgemental, confidential space for you to find out who you really are, allowing a stronger, more authentic self to emerge.

Focus Areas

Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy can be a powerful, life-changing experience, helping to improve mental health, overcome social or emotional challenges, and lead to a fulfilling existence.

By committing to weekly therapy, I will help you explore how any of the following might be affecting your life today:

  • Low-mood, anxiety, and/or depression
  • Bereavement and loss, or a sense of feeling lost
  • Feeling worthless, wondering about feelings of low self-esteem
  • Setting boundaries in personal relationships and/or at work
  • Questioning how you relate to parents, siblings and adult children
  • Experiencing problematic relationships and marital problems
  • Questioning your gender and/or sexuality
  • Addictive behaviours
  • Obsessional thoughts and compulsive behaviours
  • Uncomfortable symptoms of peri or post-menopause
  • Feeling as though your thoughts and actions are out of control
  • Guilt and regret, struggling to let go of the past
  • PTSD or symptoms of trauma
  • Unexplained medical ailments
  • Feelings of overwhelm in mid-life or retirement as life's disappointments and regrets hit home

Supervision

I offer a supportive and thought-provoking space to explore clinical material, unconscious dynamics, and countertransference feelings, to deepen your practice.

I completed my supervision training at the Rock Clinic in Brighton, a course certified by the British Association for Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Supervisors (BAPPS). My original training is from Birkbeck College, in London, where I gained a Masters (Distinction) in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy.

The classic psychoanalytic theoretical frame offers a starting point to supervision, but my approach considers necessary adaptations to original ideas, as we navigate the diversity of the psychosocial sphere we live in today. Therefore, I am flexible in my supervisory approach, believing the foundation of a positive alliance is the ability to hold a fair frame, along with consideration-of and working-in the transference when appropriate.

I am available for bi-weekly 50-minute sessions either in person (based in Worthing, UK) or online (Zoom).

All modalities welcome

Therapy changes lives...

Over time, the new self-awareness gained in therapy can enable you to make better sense of who you really are, as we work through your shameful feelings and inner conflict. A sense of feeling more focused and in control of your life, along with improved inner resilience and self-belief, better relationships, and improved emotional stability, are key benefits I hope you’ll enjoy.

Please note, I do not offer crisis support.
